Islands<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danish usually uses <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> with islands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jeg bor <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> Bornholm. \u2192 <em>I live <strong>on<\/strong> Bornholm.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vi er <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> Island. \u2192 <em>We are <strong>in<\/strong> Iceland<\/em> (English uses <em>in<\/em> for countries, even island countries.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notice: &#8220;P\u00e5&#8221; Island = We are visiting Iceland &gt;&lt; &#8220;I&#8221; Island = Talking about the (political) state of Iceland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Some_places_can_use_either_i_or_pa\"><\/span>Some places can use either <strong>i<\/strong> or <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes both are possible, but the meaning changes slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>i skolen<\/strong> = inside the school building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>p\u00e5 skolen<\/strong> = at the school (as an institution, e.g. attending or working there).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>i kirken<\/strong> = inside the church building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>p\u00e5 kirken<\/strong> is generally not used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_useful_rule_of_thumb\"><\/span>A useful rule of thumb<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use <strong>i<\/strong> when you are thinking about being <strong>inside<\/strong> something or <strong>within<\/strong> an area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> when you are thinking about being <strong>on<\/strong> a surface, <strong>at<\/strong> a location, or when Danish convention requires it (such as <strong>p\u00e5 arbejde<\/strong>, <strong>p\u00e5 stranden<\/strong>, or <strong>p\u00e5 Bornholm<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Compare_these_examples\"><\/span>Compare these examples<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Danish<\/th><th>English<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Jeg er <strong>i<\/strong> bilen.<\/td><td>I am <strong>in<\/strong> the car.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Jeg st\u00e5r <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> bilen.<\/td><td>I am standing <strong>on<\/strong> the car.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Hun er <strong>i<\/strong> k\u00f8kkenet.<\/td><td>She is <strong>in<\/strong> the kitchen.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Han er <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> kontoret.<\/td><td>He is <strong>at<\/strong> the office.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Vi bor <strong>i<\/strong> Danmark.<\/td><td>We live <strong>in<\/strong> Denmark.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Vi bor <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> Fyn.<\/td><td>We live <strong>on<\/strong> Funen.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important thing to remember is that Danish usage is partly based on <strong>physical location<\/strong> (inside vs. on) and partly on <strong>idiomatic conventions<\/strong>.
