Difference between the use of &#8220;i&#8221; and &#8220;p\u00e5&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Danish prepositions <strong>&#8220;i&#8221;<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;p\u00e5&#8221;<\/strong> can both translate to English prepositions like <strong>in<\/strong>, <strong>on<\/strong>, or <strong>at<\/strong>, but they are used in different ways depending on context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CI%E2%80%9D_in_inside_within\"><\/span><strong>&#8220;I&#8221; = in \/ inside \/ within<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use <strong>i<\/strong> when something is <strong>inside<\/strong>, <strong>within<\/strong>, or <strong>located in<\/strong> an enclosed space, area, or period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jeg er <strong>i<\/strong> huset. \u2192 <em>I am <strong>in<\/strong> the house.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hun bor <strong>i<\/strong> K\u00f8benhavn. \u2192 <em>She lives <strong>in<\/strong> Copenhagen.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>M\u00e6lken er <strong>i<\/strong> k\u00f8leskabet. \u2192 <em>The milk is <strong>in<\/strong> the refrigerator.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vi ses <strong>i<\/strong> morgen. \u2192 <em>See you <strong>tomorrow<\/strong> (literally: &#8220;in tomorrow&#8221;).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CPa%E2%80%9D_on_at\"><\/span><strong>&#8220;P\u00e5&#8221; = on \/ at<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> when something is <strong>on a surface<\/strong>, <strong>at a place<\/strong>, or with certain locations and activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_On_a_surface\"><\/span>1. On a surface<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bogen ligger <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> bordet. \u2192 <em>The book is <strong>on<\/strong> the table.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Katten sidder <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> taget. \u2192 <em>The cat is <strong>on<\/strong> the roof.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_At_certain_places\"><\/span>2. At certain places<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many places conventionally take <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> rather than <strong>i<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jeg er <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> arbejde. \u2192 <em>I am <strong>at<\/strong> work.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hun er <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> universitetet. \u2192 <em>She is <strong>at<\/strong> the university.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vi er <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> stranden. \u2192 <em>We are <strong>at<\/strong> the beach.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>De er <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> hospitalet. \u2192 <em>They are <strong>at<\/strong> the hospital.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Islands\"><\/span>3. Islands<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danish usually uses <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> with islands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jeg bor <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> Bornholm. \u2192 <em>I live <strong>on<\/strong> Bornholm.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vi er <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> Island. \u2192 <em>We are <strong>in<\/strong> Iceland<\/em> (English uses <em>in<\/em> for countries, even island countries.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notice: &#8220;P\u00e5&#8221; Island = We are visiting Iceland >&lt; &#8220;I&#8221; Island = Talking about the (political) state of Iceland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Some_places_can_use_either_i_or_pa\"><\/span>Some places can use either <strong>i<\/strong> or <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes both are possible, but the meaning changes slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>i skolen<\/strong> = inside the school building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>p\u00e5 skolen<\/strong> = at the school (as an institution, e.g. attending or working there).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>i kirken<\/strong> = inside the church building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>p\u00e5 kirken<\/strong> is generally not used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_useful_rule_of_thumb\"><\/span>A useful rule of thumb<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use <strong>i<\/strong> when you are thinking about being <strong>inside<\/strong> something or <strong>within<\/strong> an area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> when you are thinking about being <strong>on<\/strong> a surface, <strong>at<\/strong> a location, or when Danish convention requires it (such as <strong>p\u00e5 arbejde<\/strong>, <strong>p\u00e5 stranden<\/strong>, or <strong>p\u00e5 Bornholm<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Compare_these_examples\"><\/span>Compare these examples<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Danish<\/th><th>English<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>Jeg er <strong>i<\/strong> bilen.<\/td><td>I am <strong>in<\/strong> the car.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Jeg st\u00e5r <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> bilen.<\/td><td>I am standing <strong>on<\/strong> the car.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Hun er <strong>i<\/strong> k\u00f8kkenet.<\/td><td>She is <strong>in<\/strong> the kitchen.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Han er <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> kontoret.<\/td><td>He is <strong>at<\/strong> the office.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Vi bor <strong>i<\/strong> Danmark.<\/td><td>We live <strong>in<\/strong> Denmark.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Vi bor <strong>p\u00e5<\/strong> Fyn.<\/td><td>We live <strong>on<\/strong> Funen.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important thing to remember is that Danish usage is partly based on <strong>physical location<\/strong> (inside vs. on) and partly on <strong>idiomatic conventions<\/strong>.
