1. The British Empire
Read the Text Please
The British Empire began in the late 1500s. England started to build colonies overseas.
Early colonies were founded in North America and the Caribbean.
Trade was very important for the growing empire. Ships carried goods, people, and resources across the oceans and the trade brought wealth to England.
In the 1700s and 1800s, the empire grew very quickly. Britain gained land in Africa, Asia, America, and Oceania. India became one of the most important parts of the empire, India was called the jewel in the crown of the Empire.
The empire also included Canada, Australia, and many islands. The British navy was the strongest in the world. This helped Britain control trade routes and protected its colonies.
At its largest, the empire covered about one quarter of the world’s land. Millions of people lived under British rule. People often said, “The sun never sets on the British Empire.”
The empire brought wealth and power to Britain. It also spread the English language around the world. But for the colonies the empire often ment conflicts and civil wars.
In the early 1900s, the empire began to face challenges. The First and Second World Wars weakened Britain. After 1945, many colonies wanted independence and the empire slowly broke apart. Britain changed from an empire into a Commonwealth of Nations.

1.1 Punks and the English Traditions
The punk movement began in the mid-1970s as a rebellious response to mainstream culture and commercialized music.
It first gained major attention in cities like New York City and London. Bands such as Ramones and Sex Pistols helped define its fast, raw sound.
Punk music was loud, short, and simple. Often with political or anti-establishment lyrics. The movement was not only about music but also about attitude and lifestyle.
Punk fashion included ripped clothes, leather jackets, safety pins, and colorful hairstyles.
It promoted ideas of freedom, individuality, and questioning authority.
Many young people were drawn to punk because it expressed anger about social and economic problems.
Over time, punk influenced other genres like alternative rock and hardcore. Even today, the punk movement remains a symbol of rebellion and self-expression.

Sex Pistols was an English Punk band. They made a song called “God Save the Queen” insulting the Queen. The song was forbidden in England. So of course it became very popular.
Below you will find the lyrics and a video. Read the lyrics and see the video.
Here is the text. By the way the word “punk” means
- “skarn”
- “ballademager”
- “bølle”
- eller en “uopdragen/unyttig person”
- … og det kan vist nok også betyde “ussel
“God Save the Queen” er Storbritanniens nationalsang. Hør den evt her:

Her er så Sex Pistols’ sang til den britiske dronning:
God Save The Queen
God save the queen
The fascist regime (fascist regime = facistisk regime)
They made you a moron (moron = idiot)
Potential H-bomb (H-bomb = brintbombe)
God save the queen
She ain’t no human being (human beeing = “et værende menneske” = menneskelig)
There is no future
In England’s dreaming
Don’t be told what you want
Don’t be told what you need
There’s no future, no future,
No future for you
God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves her
God save the queen
‘Cause tourists are money
And our figurehead (figurehead = statsoverhoved)
Is not what she seems
Oh God save history
God save your mad parade
Oh Lord God have mercy
All crimes are paid
When there’s no future
How can there be sin
We’re the flowers in the dustbin (dustbin = skraldespand)
We’re the poison in your human machine
We’re the future, your future
